Home Detention

Home Detention is a community alternative to secure detention for pre-adjudicated youths waiting for final disposition of their current charges. Home Detention staff provide the following community supervision: phone contacts, face-to-face contacts, parent/guardian meetings, and school monitoring. Youths ordered to home detention can be confined to their home with exceptions for school, employment and approved pro-social activities. Youths eligible for this program include youths who are not an immediate risk to the community and who can be supervised in a community setting.

Target Population

Low, Moderate and High risk youths, ages 12-17 who are not at significant risk to the community. Additionally, a parent/guardian or responsible adult will provide supervision in the home.

Desired Outcome

Youths appears at court for disposition; youths will not have any new charges during the program; youths will not have any new charges or custody disposition 90-days upon program exit.

Locked Detention

Locked Detention provides short-term locked confinement for delinquent youths awaiting adjudication, placement, or serving a sentence as ordered by a Juvenile Court Judge. Youths participate in school, cognitive behavioral skill building groups, recreational activities and family visitation. JJYS operates 11 separate Locked Detention programs throughout the state. The Statewide Detention Admission Guidelines provide an extensive list of offenses for which youth can be admitted to detention.

Who Can Be Held In Locked Detention?

  • Youth charged with a felony
  • Youth charged with assaults against people (class A misdemeanor or higher)
  • Youth charged with weapons-related offenses
  • Youth charged with a DUI involving injury or with a passenger under age 16
  • Youth charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury
  • Youth charged with sexual offenses
  • Youth with active warrants
  • Youth who run away from another state
  • Youth ages 10-11 charged with a violent felony

Who Cannot Be Held In Locked Detention?

  • Youth charged with a status offense (e.g., truancy, curfew, underage smoking)
  • Youth who run away from home in Utah
  • Youth who have been abused, neglected or abandoned
  • Any youth under age 10
